# The dancing dog meme

"Dancing dog meme" is not one meme. It is a format that keeps coming back every few years with a new dog, a new sound and new tools. Here are the best-known versions, in order, with what made each one spread.

## Timeline of famous dancing dog memes

| Year | Meme | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2010 | Techno Dog | A real dog bouncing to a techno beat |
| 2016 | Brazil Dog Dance | A boy and a dog dancing together in the street |
| 2017 | Dancing Hot Dog | A Snapchat character (a hot dog, not a dog) |
| 2021 to 2023 | Dancing Barbie Dogs | Two cartoon dogs from a 2008 Barbie film |
| 2024 | Shiba Inu Dancing | A Shiba bobbing her head, used as a CapCut template |
| 2025 | AI Dancing Golden Retriever | A retriever mapped onto a human dancer with AI |

## Techno Dog (2010)

A 14-second YouTube clip from May 2010 shows a dog bouncing up and down, perfectly on the beat of a techno track ("Luna" by Evgenij Anegin). [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/techno-dog) traces how it spread through blogs and video round-up shows and was remixed many times. It set the pattern: a real dog, a strong beat, and a loop short enough to replay.

## Brazil Dog Dance (2016)

In February 2016 a video of a Brazilian boy dancing next to a dog, believed to be a stray, went viral. The dog seems to copy his moves. It was covered by the press and remixed with new songs, which is why "dancing dog Brazil" is still a common search.

## Dancing Hot Dog (2017)

Not a dog, but it shares the name. Snapchat added a dancing hot dog character in June 2017, and people put it into everything. If you were looking for that one, it lives on as a sticker and GIF, not as a pet video.

## Dancing Barbie Dogs (2021 to 2023)

Sparkles and Lily, two dogs from the 2008 film *Barbie and the Diamond Castle*, dance on their hind legs in several scenes. Clips spread on TikTok from 2021, and in January 2023 an edit set to Ice Spice's "In Ha Mood" passed 10 million views in two weeks, per [Know Your Meme](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/dancing-barbie-dogs). It proved that a dog dancing *like a person*, upright, is funnier than a dog just moving.

## Shiba Inu Dancing (2024)

On 31 December 2023 a TikTok account for a Shiba Inu named Winnie posted her bobbing her head to the "Epic Sax Guy" song. Two weeks later a green-screen version became a CapCut template, and it was used more than 340,000 times by the end of January 2024. This is the template era: everyone posts the same dog with a new caption. More on that in [dancing dog CapCut templates](https://aidancingdog.com/dancing-dog-capcut-template).

## The AI dancing dog (2025 and now)

In November 2025 a TikTok of a golden retriever doing a full human dance routine (the "I Left My Home" cadence) went viral. The dog was mapped onto a filmed human dancer with an AI tool. A green-screen copy spread the next day, and the "AI dancing dog" became a format of its own.

The step after that is the one people search for now: **making your own dog do it**. Image-to-video AI can take one photo of your pet and animate it into a dance, so the meme is no longer one famous dog. It is yours. That is what our [dancing dog maker](https://aidancingdog.com/) does, in five styles.

## Why dancing dog memes keep working

- **Contrast.** A serious-looking dog doing a silly human move is a built-in joke.
- **Short loops.** Most are under 15 seconds, so people watch them several times.
- **Easy to remix.** Swap the sound and it is a new meme.
- **Everyone has a dog in mind.** Viewers tag friends with the same breed.
